Caveats

Balearica is a newly developed platform designed to collect and centralize information on wild species inhabiting all ecological realms of the Balearic Archipelago. This technological tool aims to support the management and conservation of biodiversity across the region.

While we strive to include as many species as possible, along with their occurrence information and genetic data, it is important to note that this database does not reflect the real-time ecological conditions of the Balearic Islands, nor it is intended as a taxonomic authority. As such, Balearica should be regarded as a valuable complementary resource, but not a substitute for field surveys, specialized faunal and botanical studies, or other public databases necessary for accurate ecological and taxonomic assessments.

Taxonomic caveats

The checklist of species compiled in Balearica integrates data from public databases, scientific literature, and expert assessments. An automated approach has been used to retrieve species presence within the Balearic Archipelago by downloading occurrence records from Global Biodiversity Information Facility1 or other public data sources. However, in certain cases — such as Homo sapiens — specific taxa have been excluded to maintain the platform’s focus and relevance. This decision aligns with our goals of biodiversity management and conservation in the Balearic Archipelago.

Distribution caveats

We are continuously updating the platform with newly reported species occurrences; however, some distribution data may still be incomplete. If you notice any gaps or inconsistencies, we encourage you to reach out to us, so we can address and enhance the dataset accordingly. Your contributions help ensure the platform remains accurate and up-to-date.
